Blithe Spirit, Apollo Theatre
Last night, I went to the Apollo Theatre with the best friend to see Blithe Spirit, a comedy by Noel Coward. It stars the wonderful Alison Steadman, Hermione Norris, Robert Bathurst and Ruthie Henshall. I was really pleased and excited to be going, especially to see Alison Steadman, as I’ve always loved her since seeing her in Abigail’s Party – nothing disappointed me. I thought Alison was great – dotty, mad, quite Victorian, her grunting when she was going into a trance was hilarious. Hermione Norris was also excellent as Ruth – quite indignant, especially towards the end. Ruthie Henshall was beguiling as Elvira and Robert Bathurst was rather suave as Charles. However, I think the maid, Edith, stole the show with her attempts to slow down while serving the guests – a rather understated, but crucial role. An excellent night was had, and I can’t wait to go and see ‘We will Rock you’ in a couple of weeks.
